Keeping a Planner with ADHD
When I was a kid, my elementary and middle school would give every us planners. We were expected to have our parents sign it every night and record due dates and whatnot. Naturally, as a kid with ADHD, I didn't do that shit. It was boring! Why write anything down when I would just remember it? I wouldn't, but it didn't feel like I would forget. Oh snap, I forgot to ask my mom to sign it. I'll just take the loss. I have more important things to do than keep a planner.
Maybe the school should have provided more support in developing those skills. I don't think it would have mattered for kids like me, though.
Fast-forward several years and now... I keep a planner. I've been using a Hobonichi Techo since 2024 and I absolutely love it. I'm not always consistent about writing in it, but I love having a source of truth for my schedule. There's something satisfying about it being on paper that makes me want to keep it up. I wouldn't get that with a digital calendar.
I'll probably write a post in the future about how I use my Hobonichi Techo, but that isn't this post. This post also isn't a how-to guide for using planners with ADHD. I guess the main point is: find something you enjoy using. It's like anything other "good but difficult" habit you want to build. You need to enjoy it. Otherwise, you won't make the habit stick. That enjoyment will help you when you drop the habit and need to pick it back up. And it will drop, don't kid yourself ;)
Thsnks for sticking with this rambly post until the end :)
